Carlos Alcaraz’s scheduling complaints sees Andy Murray’s ex-coach moot mid-season break
As Carlos Alcaraz previously called for tennis authorities to act amid the tidal wave of tournaments, Mark Petchey who previously coached Andy Murray call for a mid season break.
The tennis season mainly due to the demands of the sport continues to grow into a near 365 conundrum with players having to pick and choose time off and miss tournaments due to constant play. “Yeah, I mean, tennis calendar is so tight,” the world No. 3 said. “I’ve been playing a lot of matches lately. With Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Olympics Games, I took a little break after Olympic Games. I thought it was obviously really helpful for me, probably wasn’t enough.” Albeit Alcaraz slightly has been called hypocritical for his comments including by Jannik Sinner. His words were you don’t have to play everything with Alcaraz playing Davis Cup, Laver Cup, China Open, Shanghai Masters and the Six Kings Slam in the next few weeks. But with complaints from both ATP and WTA, certain facets of the game have called for change.
“Obvious to everyone there should be a mid-season break,” Petchey wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Nothing after Wimbledon till 2 weeks before the US Open. Give fans and players a chance to recharge
“They run the season till end of October/first week November. Give players complete rest. Restart in Australia.”
“One of the reasons Break Point didn’t work was there was too much moaning about how tough life is on the tour. Normal people look at those days of work and the amount potentially you can make and get turned off with the ‘life is so tough’ line,” Petchey added. “No one isn’t saying it’s hard, the schedule could be better but most of the discussions about how to make it make more sense should be done behind closed doors.”
