David Beckham hands gift to Serena Williams as tennis legend attends Inter Miami game

Serena Williams was on hand to watch Lionel Messi drag his Inter Miami team out of a hole against New York City in their first MLS game of the 2025 season

David Beckham hosted tennis legend Serena Williams as Inter Miami kicked off its 2025 MLS campaign at home against New York City.

Becks, the co-owner of Inter Miami, regularly welcomes celebrities to Chase Stadium after acquiring Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez. Williams, who retired from professional tennis in 2022, was gifted an Inter Miami home jersey with her name and the No. 1 on the back.

It was Williams’ next appearance at a high-profile sports event, having attended Super Bowl LIX earlier this month in New Orleans, as the Philadelphia Eagles took on and beat the three-peat-chasing Kansas City Chiefs. Williams was also part of Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show.

This time, Williams traveled to the Sunshine State to watch Messi and Co. start their 2025 MLS campaign. Inter Miami dominated the Eastern Conference last season, but they lost to Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Inter Miami, now managed by another Barcelona and Argentina icon, Javier Mascherano, started fast, opening the scoring in the fifth minute via Tomás Avilés. However, the 21-year-old defender went from hero to zero on the 23rd-minute mark, receiving a red card and opening the door for New York to take control of the game.

New York equalized three minutes later through Mitja Ilenič and was held until the 55th minute to take the lead for the first time, thanks to striker Alonso Martínez. Inter Miami looked like it would be heading for a defeat on the opening day of their MLS campaign until substitute Telasco Segovia struck in the 10th minute of additional time.
