Robbie Williams’ joke about bedding four Spice Girls that upset David Beckham

Robbie Williams has confessed that his quip about having a liaison with most of the Spice Girls didn’t sit well with David Beckham, Posh Spice’s spouse. The former Take That star previously boasted about close encounters with four of the five iconic pop group members, a claim sure to stir some controversy.

Recently coming face-to-face with football legend Beckham, who is married to Victoria, Robbie acknowledged his remorse over the offhand comment while still engaging in his characteristic humour.

He reflected on his previous stage remark: “I used to say on stage, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I feel very fortunate. I’m one of the only people on the planet that’s been in Take That and four out of five of the Spice Girls’. It is a good line, but it upset all husbands and it’s not true. I’m sorry, but it’s still funny.”

In a conversation on SiriusXM, Robbie revealed an encounter with David in New York last month helped him realise the jest had landed poorly.

Port Vale fan Robbie – who grew up in Burslem and Tunstall – admitted: “I know he’s heard that line, and I know he wasn’t happy about it. It destroys a bit of my soccer-loving soul because I adore him. So for me to think that I’ve upset him or offended him in any way, I feel bad. But I’ve got to do my jokes.”

Married to actress Ayda Field and a father of four, Robbie has been linked with Spice Girls Mel B and Geri Horner in his bachelor days, although he downplayed these connections, quipping: “I dunno if dated is what I did.”
