Sergio Agüero to Race in Formula E with Porsche and Brooklyn Beckham

From lush green fields to blistering asphalt, Sergio Agüero is set to take on an audacious new challenge just over two years since hanging up his boots. The former Argentine striker, who bid farewell to football in December 2021 following his stint with FC Barcelona, is preparing to compete in a Formula E race with the Porsche team on March 4 and 5 in Miami. This race is part of the Evo Sessions, an exhibition event aimed at promoting the electric racing discipline, where the 36-year-old ex-attacker will compete alongside other sports and entertainment celebrities. Brooklyn Beckham, son of football legend David Beckham, will also be behind the wheel, driving a Jaguar.

Sergio Agüero will pilot the Porsche 99X Electric, a vehicle capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just two seconds and reaching speeds up to 320 km/h, which Pascal Wehrlein successfully drove to victory in last year’s championship. The 30-year-old German driver will not only compete but also acts as Agüero’s coach, a significant advantage for the man who achieved great heights with Atlético de Madrid and Manchester City, where he celebrated five Premier League titles. As he gears up for this new venture, the man with 101 caps for the Argentine national team (and 41 goals) expressed his excitement in a statement released by Porsche. “It’s completely crazy to go from being a footballer to a racing driver in one of the fastest cars in the world,” said the football star, who has often been spotted in Formula 1 paddocks over the past few years. “Every kid knows Porsche. The brand represents an iconic legacy, especially in motorsport. I am really thrilled and I want to thank everyone who has made this unique opportunity possible for me. I will learn as much as I can and represent the team to the best of my abilities.”

In order to be competitive next month in Florida, Sergio Agüero is currently undergoing intensive training at the German manufacturer’s development center in Weissach, near Stuttgart. He is piloting various Porsche models and also working on a simulator. “Training a non-motorist athlete for such a challenge in such a short time is a massive task for us as a team, but also for him as an athlete,” summarized Florian Modlinger, the Formula E director at Porsche. “The 99X Electric is one of the best racing cars in the world. Driving it requires meticulous preparation. The project is a bit wild, but also exciting and truly innovative. We can’t wait to be in Miami, and we hope the event will attract new fans to our sport.”
