From Victoria Beckham to Taylor Swift: All the Iconic WAGs Through the Years
Victoria Beckham. Gabrielle Union. Elin Nordegren. Taylor Swift. There are WAGs and then there are WAGs.
Any wife or girlfriend of an athlete is technically a WAG, of course, but a select few are so iconic that they become a permanent part of WAG-story (WAG history), sometimes even after their relationship has run its course.
So, for Glamour’s WAG Week, we are taking a walk down WAG-ory lane (too many WAG puns?) to remember all our favorites. Some have been lost to the annals of time, some now utterly outshine their men, but all were iconic.
Here is a definitive guide to WAGs through the years from Victoria Beckham to Taylor Swift—the good, the bad, the controversial. And the ones you totally forgot about.
Victoria Beckham and David Beckham (a.k.a. Posh and Becks)
When England’s golden footballer hooked up with a Spice Girl, it was a tabloid feeding frenzy. The pair have gone on to become almost the second royal family, beloved on both sides of the pond.
Even so, the British public has been hypercritical of Posh in particular (patriarchy gonna patriarchy). When Beckham cheated, 40% of the public apparently blamed…her.
Four kids later, the pair are still together.
LeBron James and Savannah James
High school sweetheart alert! The basketball superstar met his future bride after spotting her at a football game—they went to rival high schools in Ohio—and the rest is history.
The couple has been together for 23 years, married for 11, and have three children together: Bronny (20), Bryce (17), and Zhuri (10). Savannah James has the distinction of being both a WAG and a MAWAG (Moms and Wives and Girlfriends, just go with it) after her son, Bronny, made his historic NBA debut this year alongside his father, playing for the Lakers.
So, safe to say, Savannah James has quite a WAG legacy to be proud of.
Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren
It was the split heard ’round the world. Golf great Woods had a squeaky clean image when he married Swedish au pair Nordegren in 2004. They had two young kids together.
But then, a 2009 bombshell report in the National Enquirer alleged that Woods had cheated on his wife with multiple women. A sketchy car crash and much more tabloid reports later, the pair finally divorced in 2010. Nordegren later told People she had “been through hell” and was “blindsided” by the affairs.
Nordegren got her happy ending, though. She got together with former NFL tight end Jordan Cameron in 2017 and the couple has three young kids together (so, she’s still a WAG!). She and Woods—who has dated skier Lindsey Vonn and others since the split—are now on good terms. They were recently spotted together supporting their now 15-year-old son, Charlie, as he played at a Florida golf tournament.
Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo
Simpson’s WAG era was fraught. The singer began dating the Cowboys quarterback in 2007, and by the end of the year she was attending games in a pink jersey.
But when Romo’s play faltered, fans—and tabloids—blamed Simpson. As one blogger wrote, “Everybody’s due a bad day at the office, but if Romo plays like this next week, Jessica Simpson will become the most hated celebrity significant other since Yoko Ono.”
Allegedly, the Dallas Cowboy dumped the singer the night before her 29th birthday in 2009. Fun facts: He’s now married to Chace Crawford’s sister, and Simpson is still technically a WAG. She married her NFL player husband, Eric Johnson, after he retired from the league.
Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher
Underwood is a country queen, but also a proud hockey WAG. She met husband Mike Fisher backstage at one of her shows in 2008, and they have been together ever since.
Fisher played for the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators before retiring in 2018, but Underwood has a lot of praise for her husband’s other role in life: dad to their two sons.
“He’s such a great dad, and he’s so supportive of what I do, and I’m supportive of him, and we just love our little family,” People reported. Awww.
