The Victoria Beckham-approved styling trick to looking chic this winter
Also known as ‘turtleneck hair’ or ‘faux bob’, this easy look doesn’t even require a hairbrush
There is a fashion insider styling trick so subtle it may have escaped your notice. At the same time, it’s the kind of thing that, once you know about it, you may start spotting everywhere.
It’s known as the ‘Turtleneck Tuck’, although you may have heard it referred to as ‘turtleneck hair’, the ‘hair tuck’, or the ‘faux bob’. All you need to do is pull a cosy roll-neck jumper over your head and resist the urge to untuck your hair from the collar. Yes, really, it’s that easy. No brush, no accessories, not even a kirby grip required.
It gives off a nonchalant attitude; it says, “Oh, I just threw my outfit together without a second thought” – even if you’ve agonised over your shoes, or your shirt, or the very jumper holding the look together.
The latest person to draw our attention to this look is Victoria Beckham, who was pictured in Paris recently in a coat with a funnel-neck so deep, it obscured half her face. Along with the requisite sunglasses – the ‘Mask’ style from her own collection – her hair was nestled within the funnel, just a few strands spilling out.
It looked chic, and is sure to spark fresh appeal for the look – but it’s not a Beckham innovation. Its origins go back more than 15 years: many believe it to be the brainchild of fashion writer Leandra Medine, or designer Phoebe Philo, the former Celine and Chloe creative director. We saw it deployed in Philo’s advertising campaigns, catwalk shows, and it’s how she styled herself to take a bow at the end of them, too. She even did the trick in a set of official portraits while working at Celine – a statement of her own on an occasion that most would opt for a professional blowdry.
