The 5 oldest ATP Finals champions: Novak Djokovic features twice, Roger Federer 3rd

Novak Djokovic is the oldest player to win the ATP Finals title, while Roger Federer and Andy Murray both feature in the top five of the list.

There have been only three occasions where a player aged 30 or older has won the men’s season-ending championships.

Here, we look at the five oldest singles champions at the ATP Finals.

5. Ilie Nastase, 1975, 29 years, 4 months

Ilie Nastase claimed his fourth and final ATP Finals title in Stockholm in 1975 to conclude a run of four triumphs in five editions of the tournament.

In his round robin matches, Nastase earned wins against Manuel Orantes and Adriano Panatta, while he was defaulted against Arthur Ashe. The Romanian then dominated Guillermo Vilas and Bjorn Borg in the semi-finals and final respectively.

4. Andy Murray, 2016 – 29 years, 6 months

Andy Murray won all five of his matches at the 2016 ATP Finals in London to secure his only year-end championships crown.

The Brit saw off Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka to top his group and edged out Milos Raonic in an epic semi-final before he downed Djokovic in the championship match.

3. Roger Federer, 2011 – 30 years, 3 months

Roger Federer was 30 years and three months old when he won his sixth and final ATP Finals title at the 2011 edition of the event in London.

The Swiss overcame Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish in the round robin stage before defeating David Ferrer in the semi-finals and Tsonga again in the final to seal a clean sweep.

2. Novak Djokovic, 2022 – 35 years, 5 months

Djokovic became the first player over the age of 30 to win the ATP Finals when he ended a seven-year wait for title at the season-ending championships in 2022.

The then 35-year-old downed Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev in the group stage before beating Taylor Fritz in the last four and Casper Ruud in the final to complete an unbeaten run in Turin.

1. Novak Djokovic, 2023 – 36 years, 5 months

Djokovic broke his own record to become the oldest ATP Finals champion with his record seventh triumph at the 2023 edition of the event in Turin.

The Serbian earned round robin victories over Holger Rune and Hubert Hurkacz before delivering stunning performances to dismantle Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals and the final.
