Victoria Beckham reveals son Cruz’s startling 10-word admission about dad David
When Cruz Beckham saw his dad's documentary about his life he was left amazed by his ex-Manchester United father's footballing prowess.
Victoria Beckham has opened up about her husband David’s award winning documentary – revealing son Cruz didn’t know how “good” his father was at football until he saw it.
The former Spice Girl turned fashion designer spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about the impact of her husband’s Netflix show Beckham – ahead of her own upcoming docu-series.
Soccer legend David won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League during his career with Manchester United, before going on to play with Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.
But Victoria, 50, said it took a TV show about the ex-winger to make 19-year-old Cruz appreciate his dad’s success.
She said: “It was funny, actually. Cruz was like: ‘I didn’t realise that dad was so good at football.’
“You forget it was a long time ago. They were always at the games, but they were really little, and too young to understand.”
The mother-of-four also talks the public shaming of her husband after he was red carded during the 1988 World Cup. He was sent off in a match against Argentina, which England then lost.
She admits she would struggle to deal with anything similar happening to Romeo – who is following in his father’s footsteps, playing for Brentford B.
She said: “When it happened, David was the same age that Romeo is now. That’s a lot for a 22-year-old. When you’re in it, there’s that sink-or-swim feeling, and you just get on with it. And we had each other, and the rest is history.
“But the thought of my Romeo having to go through it … I don’t know how he would handle that. I don’t know how anyone would handle that. But we didn’t have a choice.”
