Victoria Beckham’s ‘secret embarrassment’ amid popularity of ‘Beckham’ docuseries
The Netflix docuseries has racked up millions of views.
David and Victoria Beckham are very much used to being in the spotlight after a quarter-century together, but the couple’s public perception shifted following the release of Netflix’s four-episode “Beckham” docuseries. Less than a month after its debut on the popular streaming platform in October 2023, “Beckham” amassed 30 million views and 145 million viewing hours. It was the platform’s most-viewed original docuseries since “Harry & Meghan” dropped in 2022.
But the moment that hooked in viewers and went viral almost instantly on social media was a shockingly-candid on-camera moment where David checked Victoria’s privilege as she discussed her upbringing with director Fisher Stevens. New information revealed that Victoria — the fashion icon and former Spice Girl — would have much preferred a different interaction to go viral, rather than the scene that did
Was David responsible for Victoria’s “embarrassment”?
In a recent interview with the trade magazine Variety, Stevens sat down to discuss certain elements of shooting “Beckham”, which took viewers behind the scenes with rare footage of the Spice Girls’ world tour and David’s time as a star midfielder at Manchester United — where he was playing when he married Victoria in 1999.
“I was thinking, ‘God, she’s really sweet and she’s really open,'” Stevens said about interviewing Victoria. “And she starts to talk and telling me, ‘We came from kind of modest …’ Then David opens the door and he goes, ‘Be honest. Be honest.’ And I’m like, ‘What?'”
Stevens said the scene wasn’t scripted, and it prompted mixed feelings for cast and crew.
“(Victoria) was very embarrassed and nervous because clearly, (David)’s been watching (the interview), and I was mortified myself,” Stevens said.
