Andy Murray’s mother wants to promote pickleball in Scotland: “It’s perfect for getting people more active”
Pickleball is a sport that has become fashionable and is growing exponentially every year at a devilish speed. It is practiced mainly in the United States but Judy Murray, the mother of the legendary Andy Murray, has spoken positively about this relatively new activity, saying that it can help people move more. These words could make people in Scotland encouraged to practice it in the coming days. Pickleball is a mix of tennis, badminton, and table tennis that uses a larger ball, paddles, and a small court. Although more traditional tennis players react in mixed ways, casual fans have taken to the sport, which has seen an exponential increase in participation around the world.
Scottish climate makes pickleball the ideal recreational sport, says Murray After trying the sport for herself, Murray became an avid fan and has been trying to spread the word in Scotland. Speaking at the Skechers Pickleball Scottish Open last weekend in Glasgow, Scotland, he spoke about the benefits of pickleball and believes the unpredictable Scottish weather made it perfect for his home country.
“It’s fun, engaging and incredibly inclusive,” says Judy Murray. “And in Scotland it suits us perfectly. We have terrible weather and badminton courts everywhere, in all the community centers and sports centres. Even the churches have badminton courts. “So, in terms of speed of installation, wherever you are, I think it’s perfect for getting more people more active, more often in Scotland. It’s a perfect transfer from tennis to something that will keep me in a similar game, but at the other end of the scale, you could also see how it’s a great introduction to any type of racquet sport because it’s so doable.”
