Aryna Sabalenka’s search for world number 1: Can she overtake Iga Swiatek?
Aryna Sabalenka is moving ever closer to reclaiming the world rankings, although she will first have to put in a good performance at the Wuhan Open to take the lead in a tight race against Iga Swiatek by the end of the year. The Belarusian had an impressive streak of 15 wins in a row, which only ended in the quarterfinals in Beijing against Karolina Muchova. With her titles at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, Sabalenka appears to be closing the gap to Swiatek, who seemed almost unbeatable in the WTA race just a few months ago with a lead of over 4,000 points.
However, Swiatek hasn’t racked up many points since the French Open, having only played three tournaments since then. At Wimbledon she was eliminated early in the third round, at Cincinnati she lost in the semi-finals and at the US Open she reached the quarter-finals – results with which the world number 1 is unhappy.
