“Iga Świątek did not report an injury. It’s a classic mental breakdown”
I think that the athlete must be in a very bad condition to give up the fight for the top position in the ranking. I don’t think anyone consciously wants to give up being number one. Not going to a big tournament and automatically giving up a thousand points? – Artur Szostaczko, the first coach of Iga Świątek, wonders in an interview with i.pl. For me it’s a classic mental breakdown – adds the Warszawianka Warszawa coach.
Iga Świątek’s last appearance so far was at the beginning of September at the US Open. In the quarterfinals of the event in New York, she lost 2:6, 4:6 to Jessica Pegula. Then the tennis player born in Warsaw withdrew from the competition in Seoul. While this could be explained by fatigue from the long season, the withdrawal from the China Open 2024 on hard courts in Beijing (September 25 – October 6) was quite a surprise. The winner of last year’s event was supposed to be the tournament’s number one in the capital of China and was supposed to defend 1,000 points. “For personal reasons, I am forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing. I’m very sad because I had a great time winning there last year. I couldn’t wait to go back there. Fans will be able to see great tennis there. I regret that I will not be part of it,” Świątek wrote in a statement quoted by the WTA.
Iga Świątek will play in Wuhan? The Raszynianka will therefore lose 1,000 ranking points. Her first appearance after a long break will be a tournament in Wuhan on October 7-13.
