Dan Evans reacts after what British fans have done in first Davis Cup tie since Andy Murray’s retirement

Dan Evans and Great Britain were always going to find it difficult at the Davis Cup without Andy Murray.

Evans overtook Murray in Britain’s Davis Cup appearance list, but the group stages in Manchester this week certainly didn’t go to plan for him and his team.

The home nation failed to reach the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga in November after two losses and a draw in Group D.

A victory was secured against Finland without Jack Draper, who missed the opener following his phenomenal US Open venture.

Draper returned for the meetings with Argentina and Canada, but Great Britain lost both fixtures 2-1, with the 22-year-old losing his two ties.

Dan Evans makes Andy Murray claim after Great Britain Davis Cup exit

Evans is considering his Davis Cup future after the latest event, although we was grateful for the British Davis Cup record crowd of 15,700 against Canada.

“Whether you like it or not, Andy Murray sold the tickets before – that’s the bottom line,” said Evans, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“That’s how we got people through the door. So without him, getting over 15,000 is an exceptional effort.”

Great Britain’s meeting with Finland on Wednesday drew 6,500 fans, but that support grew to a sell-out 15,700 crowd on Sunday.
