Iga Swiatek is doing everything to finish the year as world leader! Poland’s surprise decision
Iga Swiatek has performed below her standards in recent months, and Aryna Sabalenka has moved closer to her in the WTA rankings after her success at the US Open. The Pole has many points to defend at the end of the year and has decided to enter next week’s WTA 500 tournament in Seoul to try and enrich her points collection.
Iga Swiatek is going through a weaker period in terms of results. After capturing her 4th title at Roland Garros, the Pole suffered disappointment after disappointment. At Wimbledon she stopped in the 3rd round, and then she missed the gold at the Olympic Games in Paris, where she only took bronze, although she started as a big favorite. The world leader was hoping to regain her confidence in the hard season in the USA, but she was outclassed by Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals in Cincinnati (3-6, 3-6), and at the US Open she stopped in the quarters, being defeated as well clear by Jessica Pegula (2-6, 4-6).
Iga had a very good end to 2023, with titles won in Beijing and the Tournament of Champions, so they have a lot of points to defend. Sabalenka dominated the US Open and closed to just over 2,000 points behind the Pole, but the Belarusian has the advantage of having few points to defend in the coming period, so she can hope to finish the year at world number one.
