Martina Navratilova, after Sabalenka’s coronation: “We will see who will finish world number 1 at the end of the year but Aryna is catching up with Iga Swiatek in the rankings”
What if Aryna Sabalenka was going to take over Iga Swiatek’s world number 1 spot by the end of the season? If the Belarusian is still 2169 points behind the Pole after her coronation at the US Open, everything is still possible. This is exactly what Martina Navratilova thinks in comments reported on Sky Sports. “She’s the best player on hard court and she’s catching Iga Swiatek in the rankings, so we’ll see who ends up world No. 1 at the end of the year. I think mathematically it is still possible for Sabalenka to achieve this by the end of the year and she should do so because she has won two major tournaments. I feel like she has improved every aspect of her game, incrementally and overall. I think she can improve her transition game and come to the net more often. She is so big at the net that it is difficult to pass her. I would like to see this transition. It is on the sliced backhand that she can improve the most, especially on grass. »
