Fans reminded Victoria Azarenka that Iga Swiatek continues to occupy the World No. 1 spot after her congratulatory message for Aryna Sabalenka’s 2024 US Open triumph.
Second-seed Sabalenka got the better of the eighth-seed Jessica Pegula in the summit clash at the New York Major 7-5, 7-5 on Saturday, September 7.The Belarusian added the US Open title to her Australian Open title from earlier in the year to become only the fifth woman to win two hardcourt Grand Slam titles in a season. She joins an elite list of women including Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Justine Henin, and Angelique Kerber.
The only other Belarusian Grand Slam champion, Victoria Azarenka, took to X to congratulate her compatriot on an impressive title and overall season. Notably, Sabalenka ends 2024 with the most women’s singles wins in Grand Slams (18). Azarenka wrote:
