Not only that, he then defied the doctors by playing on for another five years with a metal hip.
So it should hardly be a surprise that he has knuckled down to a fresh challenge now that he has decided to hang up the tennis racquet for good.
The 37-year-old has no shortage of other things to be getting on with – wife Kim, for instance, said at the time of his retirement that from the sport that she was looking forward to having some help with the school run.
But sport is in his blood – and the golf course seems like it will be his next venue.
