2 years ago 🇵🇱 Iga Świątek defeated 🇺🇸 Jessica Pegula in the US Open quarterfinals. Will this scenario repeat itself tonight? 🎾❓

Świątek only in the first round against Kamilla Rakhimova couldn’t cope with the conditions on the court, since then she has been playing much more cautiously and does not force herself to accelerate. This was very important in the clashes with the next Russians, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Liudmila Samsonova, especially since both of them were really up to the task and it was necessary to maintain concentration.

Pegula did not shine for a long time this year. She won the WTA 500 in Berlin, but she was unsuccessful at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and an injury eliminated her from the clay season. All the more impressive is what the American has been doing since Toronto. The 30-year-old enters the US Open quarterfinals with a 13-1 record in the last three tournaments and only one loss in the final in Cincinnati to Aryna Sabalenka. Świątek and Pegula will face each other for the tenth time, the Pole leads in this competition 6-3. The match from five years ago in Washington is already old news, and later our tennis player did rather well in these matches. Especially in the most important ones, i.e. two finals (Doha and WTA Finals) and two Grand Slam quarterfinals (Roland Garros and US Open 2022, both tournaments Świątek finished with the trophy). However, the American was able to put up a fight quite often, especially in slightly faster conditions. She won two times against Świątek last year in what was a breakthrough for her in Montreal (from 2-4 in the third set when the Pole had problems with timing all week), and also earlier during the United Cup on a very fast court in Sydney. Our team then changed courts after the group stage, and Pegula entered the match with great faith in winning and attacked fiercely with a flat ball. It’s been a long time since the match between Świątek and Pegula looked so interesting. The American does not reach the far stages of Grand Slam tournaments (0-6 in the quarterfinals), but if she manages to break through with the wave of self-confidence she has been riding on in the last month, she will again have to play with great concentration from the beginning. Pegula has the opportunity to attack the Polish woman’s second pass or play flat with her forehand, the conditions are favorable to this to some extent (playing in the evening, however, may help neutralize this a bit). Świątek is still the big favorite, but the American now has the basis to fight.
