It’s time, it’s time! Iga Swiatek doesn’t want to miss the chance to shine in the
Iga Swiatek, world number 1, will face Liudmila Samsonova (16th) this Monday in the round of 16 of the US Open. The Pole, so far, is undefeated against the Russian.
The Warsaw native’s path through Flushing Meadows has been relentless. Her most complicated match, at least since the development, was in her debut, when she needed almost two hours of play to win against the Russian Kamilla Rakhimova (104th) by 6-4 and 7-6 (6). Subsequently, she had as her rival the Japanese Ena Shibahara (217th), who could do little against the power of her rival and ended up falling 6-0 and 6-1 in just over an hour.
In the third round her opponent was Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (27th), whom she beat 6-4 and 6-2 in one hour and 35 minutes. In this way, Samsonova will be the third Russian player that the Pole will have in four US Open matches. The record totally favors the leader of the ranking with three wins in the same number of fights, a product of successes in Stuttgart 2022, Dubai (2023) and Beijing (2023), totaling six sets won and one lost. The match will take place at the Arthur Ashe, the complex’s most important stadium, in the third round, after the matches between Jessica Pegula and Diana Shnaider, and Daniil Medvedev and Nuno Borges.
